IHS Alumni Interview with Yvette Gittens

Bio-Yvette-Gittens

Graduated 1991

How did IHS prepare you for your career or college?
IHS has given me the mindset of becoming tenacious. It was difficult to study and focus in an overcrowded school environment. School in my time finished from 1:15 p.m. To me it was like a crash course, with limited time. I had to help out my parents by selling on afternoon with no time to do homework. It was stressful. I only see it that way as I reflect now.

What specific skills did you learn that are most useful now?
I learned the skill of independence. With God’s help; I would make decisions on my own and often avoid scribbing for a test. I also learned to be punctual, respectful of others and be dependable. If I say I will show up, if know unforeseen circumstances, I will show up.

Did you know what you wanted to study/focus on when you graduated?
I never really knew what I wanted to study as a professional career, until I started my family. I loved the things of God and decided in 1998 to register for Baptist Bible College of the Windward Island where I studied for one year. The college closed before three years for renovation.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?
After graduation it was difficult to find a job. I started working at Jaxs Enterprise as a Store Clerk, then at Adam’s Electrical (a small shop selling electrical supplies, opposite the police barracks.) I then worked at Net Data then in January 5th, 2000 I started working with the Government of SVG as a typist, then Clerk Typist.

What is your current industry and job title?
I am an Early Childhood Practitioner, Literacy Specialist, Reflexologist, Medical Foot Care Practitioner and Teacher

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?
What I would do differently was to learn a foreign language. Moreso French. The younger you learn things the more knowledgeable you become. I hardly know French now I grew older. The passion faded with time.

What do you know now that you wish you knew in high school?
I wish I had known all the subject I never got an opportunity to learn well. Subjects like Math, History and French. History reminded me of slavery so I only got 60% and sometimes 70%. My teacher Mr. Cutbert Knights did not send students with inconsistent grades to write, GCE, I think was at that time.

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you sooner?
I wish I was given the advice of not to fear failure and learn a skill. A skill well learned is very important.

What is the best way to handle the transition from high school to college or career?
After High School, transition to college. You can work for 1 year but continue on the journey to success. Choose your career path wisely it will determine how you take care of your family.

What is one thing you didn’t like about your high school experience?
The school was too overcrowded and students made fun of teachers, refusing to take school seriously.

Who was your favorite teacher?
Silky Ben (deceased). He was my Human and Social Biology, Social Studies and Principal of Business teacher.

If you could change one school rule, what would it be?
In the 21st century I would see that hairs of students are well groomed and no earring in ears. Focus on your school work and learn well. Too many things are distracting our youths today. But the same distraction and be use as a pathway to success. Example the internet.

What clubs or extracurriculars would you recommend joining?
Join a book club. Reading helps to broaden your creativity. Learn a skill as well.

What is one mandatory course you would create for future seniors?
Communication. Many people hear but they don’t listen. This causes a lot of chaos in our world today.

What are you most passionate about right now?
Literacy is my passion and providing healthy footcare services.

What are you most excited about in this next phase of your life?
Giving back by teaching the knowledge I have learned over the years to the young people of my country.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In Paris lol

What’s one new skill or hobby you’d like to learn?
I will like to learn barbering and plumbing.

Would you be willing to speak at an alumni event or mentor a student?
If time permits
